It takes more than state-of-the-art technology and well-trained staff to run a great hospital: Volunteers are a vital component to success.
Whether they are providing directions, delivering flowers or supporting patients in an Emergency Department, volunteers improve the experience of patients and visitors at healthcare facilities. “We’re very grateful to all of our volunteers,” says Laura Heikkila, Island Health’s Manager of Volunteer Resources for the Comox Valley. “The service and welcome they provide really mean a lot to people.”
Current volunteers say the experience is mutually rewarding. “I think this is the best job in the hospital,” says Al Ruff, who volunteers at Campbell River Hospital.
“A lot of people are anxious when they come through these doors,” he adds. “If we can smile and help them find their way, make they feel more comfortable, that’s important.”
Volunteers already support numerous facilities in the Comox Valley and Campbell River area, from health units to hospitals. Many more volunteers will be needed to support the opening of the new Campbell River and Comox Valley Hospitals in September.
“These hospitals belong to our communities,” says Carmen Christiansen, Island Health Manager of Volunteer Resources in Campbell River. “Volunteers will be a key part in helping community members navigate these new facilities, and also support the patients who are accessing services.
“We are really looking forward to working with our experienced volunteers from St Joseph’s and Campbell River Hospital as we prepare to move into the new space, as well as bringing on new volunteers who want to be part of these exciting new facilities.”
